Senegal LNG Export & Gas Monetization
Summary
Senegal has emerged as one of Africa's most promising new hydrocarbon producers, transitioning from a net energy importer to an LNG exporter in under two years. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project, a $4.8 billion cross-border development between Senegal and Mauritania, achieved first gas in December 2024, first LNG in February 2025, and is now ramping toward full commercial operations. With 2026 exports projected to nearly double to 36 LNG cargoes (~2.7 mtpa), Senegal is positioning itself as West Africa's newest energy hub. Simultaneously, the government is pursuing an ambitious domestic gas monetization agenda centered on the Yakaar-Teranga field (25 Tcf), which has shifted from an export-focused LNG project to a domestic-energy-first strategy under state-owned Petrosen.
