EMERGING HYDROCARBON FRONTIERS IN AFRICA
Summary
Africa's hydrocarbon landscape is undergoing a structural transformation. While mature OPEC+ producers (Nigeria, Algeria, Libya) face capacity erosion of ~260 kb/d by 2030, a new generation of frontier basins is attracting unprecedented capital deployment. The Orange Basin (Namibia/South Africa), the Rovuma Basin (Mozambique), and the Albertine Graben (Uganda) represent the continent's most significant supply growth vectors. Total African oil production is forecast to recover modestly from ~7.2 mb/d in 2024 to ~7.5 mb/d by 2028, driven entirely by non-OPEC+ frontier developments, before resuming decline as mature field depletion outpaces new project ramp-ups.
The LNG frontier is equally dynamic. With the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 now operational (first cargo April 2025), Mozambique's LNG complex restarting after a four-year force majeure, and Coral Norte FLNG reaching FID in October 2025, Africa is positioning to add >20 Mtpa of new LNG capacity by decade-end—reshaping global gas supply geography.
